11:01 pm - Dog's breath is not supposed to be Wintergree-y

"Results 1 - 20 of about 4,680 for my lab ate a TUMS"

The lady who answers the phone at the Animal Emergency thought it was pretty hilarious.

(he'll probably be fine but I always have to check.)

01:02 pm - a random sampling of fandoms

The [info]picfor1000 assignments are out and I got a gorgeous photo which could be good for all sorts of things, though personally I feel like writing something angsty.

I have one idea already, but I made this poll so I'm going to use it.

Which fandom(s) do you want to see me write in? I'm thinking either something new or really old.

Poll #1508120 Fandoms! There are so many!

Also, Stargate Atlantis RPF, say what? But...but...I'd sort of like to try it? Even though I have no idea how?

10:04 pm - Current Project on Ebook Library

This is crossposted to the fanfic_ebooks LJ community.

Since I learned how to use Macros in Microsoft Word 2007 I've been slowly but surely creating LRF/Mobi/and epub versions of my absolute favorite stories hosted at the Ebook Library as well as most of the stories posted recently. This is the reason for long delays between updates besides the holidays. My current project is converting all the Top Ten most read fics at the archive, however that will not take long since many already have all four ebook formats.

My question/challenge to the community is does anyone have any specific conversion requests for stories already listed on the archive that are currently only in RTF format?

For anyone that adds a request I'll honor it if you leave feedback/review at the author's post at the Ebook Library. :)

Leave a link here leading to your review of the story and I'll get it converted in the order in which it was requested. :)

10:00 am - 12 Days of Cliche: Day 12 - Vid: 'Wake' by cupidsbow

Are you sad? Here we are at the end of the fest... it whizzed by so fast, didn't it? But, wow, what a lot of stuff we made!

To finish things off, I'm posting my favourite of all the songvids I've made to date. It's about Jack, the essential factness of Jack. Oh, Jack. (If you're interested in the technical side, there are some more thoughts behind the cut.)

If you'd like to play with us by sharing a cliche -- a ficlet or art or whatever fanwork takes your fancy -- link it in comments here before Friday, and I'll add it to my round-up post. There's always room for more cliches, people! :)

Thanks for coming on the journey with us. Hope and I have had a ball and we hope you have too. And now, onto the vid of ultimate Jackness...

01:53 pm - relentless in the joy department

This morning I woke up feeling blue, with all my usual aches and pains and an extra helping of fatigue. My plan was to doze as much as possible during the morning, with the exception of pee breaks for both me and the puppy.

Dexter had a different plan in mind.

Oh, he allowed me to go back to sleep after his first walk of the day. He even napped along with me on the sofa for about an hour and a half. But when I made to move to the more comfortable bed, Dexter wouldn't have it. He yipped, he whined, he grooooaned, he barked. He made his weirdly speechlike growling noises and his high-pitched trill and honk. He even cried a little.

When that failed to rouse me -- a pillow over the head mutes everything to background noise, he started with the inappropriate chewing: a cardboard box packed for donation to the thrift store, my shoe rack, my pyjama pants and finelly the pine leg of the bed. That's the one I can't ignore because he's quite capable and willing to eat the entire bed, mattress, duvet and all.

So I grudgingly dragged myself out of the comfy bed, put on some old jeans, some sockes and a jacket over my fuzzy pink pyjama top and putting on my boots.

I told Dexter: "We are going for a SHORT walk. No park, no puppies. I don't want to hear whining about this."

Yeah, sure, whatever, Dexter said, throwing himself at the door.

Two and a half hours later...

It's all kind of a blur -- especially the part where I bought $12 worth of bully sticks* and then found myself ordering a coffee at starbucks IN MY PYJAMAS. I know I've had that dream before.

There was also excercise, fresh air, observation of puppy behaviours and interactions, a chance to listen to my audiobook**, plus the usual conversation with the baristas ([info]faith0322 will know what I mean when I say it was the "Darlin'" boys behind the counter today.) and also the usual interactions with dog owners, dog lovers and other people who Dexter wanted to smell.

I would *like* to make the point that having a puppy forced me to overcome my depression, got me out of bed and into the world to exercise and interact and that that is a Very Good Thin that will probalby serve me well in the future and for the rest of my life. But the thing is, I *like* dozing.

And so does Dexter -- now happily doing just that on my pillow in the other room while I have to face the horror of online banking and going to work! Mind you I and my OPPOSABLE THUMBS have full access to the peanut butter, so Ha! Dog. HAH! What is your snappy comeback to THAT?

Being blissfully asleep, Dexter has none.

04:35 pm - Fic Hangover

Does anyone else get fic hangovers? After the flurry of writing and editing and posting and going back to fix typos and worrying and being all relieved that people didn't hate it...I get kind of exhausted and sore (from being tense? hunching over the computer?) and must politely avert my eyes from my own work for a bit because I have seen too much of it.

At least they never last long.

In the novel concept of Other Things:

1) Do you think there's such a thing as a Lip Gloss Critical Mass? Like, when you have six in your purse and seventeen in your bathroom and a few on your bedside table and another three in your work bag and you know that if you open any other carrying item, you will find more...is there some point where you just cannot buy another one? (I know, for the many of you are not lip gloss people, the question is sort of silly. But I know some of you know exactly what I'm talking about.) I only ask because Sephora has a few on sale that I want to try and yet I just cannot bring myself to buy them.

2) [info]villainny is hosting an extremely nifty Sex is Not the Enemy challenge (with no apparent production deadline). I have not decided whether to sign up or not but I can think of many of you who really should.

3) Prompted by the seven empty icon spaces on my LJ (and 14 or more on DW), I am pondering graphics software for the MacBook. Any recs or warnings? I was using an ancient version of Photoshop on George the PC, so I don't need anything cutting edge, and cheap is good, but George is ailing and I can't figure out whether the MacBook already has a program that lets me put snarky text on pictures of tv characters and make them tiny...or not.

01:31 pm - 12 Days of Cliche: Day 11 - Fic: 'Golden Ratio' by Hope

Wow, we are so close the end of our fest. I'm feeling a bit sad. But, on the other hand, there's this fantastic timey-wimey, romantic piece of perfection from Hope! I defy anyone to feel bad after reading it. :)

ETA: Also, how ironic is it that my timey-wimey story ended up full of porn, and Hope's is PG-13? LOL.

Title: Golden Ratio: DreamWidth, LiveJournal
Author: Hope
Fandom: Torchwood and Doctor Who
Pairing: Jack/Ianto, plus the Doctor
Rating: PG-13
Notes: My final work for 12 Days of Cliché. Thank you to [personal profile] cupidsbow for cheerleading and beta!

Title: Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Author: [info]smittywing/Smitty
Recipient: [info]smacky30 (Written for the 2009 [info]1hour2write Rossi/Prentiss Fic Exchange.)
Pairing: Criminal Minds, Rossi/Prentiss
Rating: So very, very NC-17. Possibly NC-27.
WC: ~13k words *cough*
Prompts: 1. Dave is Emily's Secret Santa
2. Roaring fire, Christmas Tree, Hot Sex
3. Team party and Emily kisses Dave under the mistletoe (maybe too much eggnog???)
(One of these prompts is not like the other.)

Summary: "I used to drink a lot of things," Emily said automatically.

Notes:
1) This was so very very very VERY late. As usual, I misjudged the target wordcount.
2) I must heap thanks on [info]wojelah, [info]shetiger, and [info]reccea. Without them, I would have dissolved into a quivering mass of insecurity long ago. Many thanks to [info]microgirl8225 for organizing the ficathon and being so understanding when I emailed her and said, "Um. This is going to take a little longer than I thought." Thanks also to Google, Wikipedia, and Write or Die. I did not actually go out and drink absinthe for this one, so the internets helped a lot.
3) The fic is posted on Dreamwidth because it wouldn't fit in one LJ entry. If you don't have a DW account, you can comment with OpenID or anonymously, or you can comment to this entry. (All will be treasured equally!)

02:35 pm - There's still time for a restraining order, Cherie!

Welcome to 2010!

Mr. Pants had an interview with the kids at Seattle Geekly yesterday, which will be posted Tuesday, January 5. They are very charming, and if you have some free time, give their podcast a listen. Naturally, Mr. Pants pimped Zombocalypse Now (which, incidentally, is now available in ebook/Kindle format *koff* *koff*), and a good time was had by all.

In addition to ringing in the new year by going to bed at 10:45 (woo!), our long weekend featured Sherlock Holmes (a [slashy as all heck] two-fisted lighthearted steampunk romp, I say!) and the long overdue cleaning of my bedroom closet, crammed with junk from when we moved in six months ago. On New Year's Day, I happened to run into [info]cmpriest, a.k.a. Cherie Priest, writer of Boneshaker. I was trying to hunt down a Mary Engelbreit calendar as a gift for one of the Pants brood, and was careful to preface my request by making it clear that such an item was far-too-twee and not for me, personally. She was nearby, signing a few books for display, and she helped me narrow it down for the clerk by specifying that "it wasn't the one who takes pictures of babies". Alas, there was no joy on the Engelbreit front at Barnes and Noble, and our pleasantries traded, I continued upstairs. I found Mr. Pants and mentioned that I'd just met Ms. Priest, writer of Boneshaker, etc., and babies, you should have seen his little face. He got all intense: "Cherie Priest is here? In this building?" It was like I'd told him The Terminator had asked for him on the phone. "Um, yeah, she was signing books downstairs." "I had no idea she lived in town. Is she still here?" As you may surmise, I was dispatched to skulk around and I spotted her at checkout (elfin, bitchin' librarian glasses, punk blue hair - your classic fangirl, basically) and said, "I don't want you to think I'm stalking you or anything, but... I am, a little bit. You wrote Boneshaker, didn't you? My boyfriend would love to meet you." Mr. Pants showed up, still in his big black winter coat and looking a little wild-eyed, I admit. I fear we may have... slightly terrified her. "I've been meaning to pick this up. Your book is the number one pairing with mine on Amazon!" "You should have seen his little face when he heard you were here," I offered, and she gamely swapped business cards with him and fled the scene. I like the book design (its printed in olde-timey brown ink!), and it's set in Seattle, and is apparently some kind of steampunk zombie novel, so I bought a signed copy for Mr. Pants and we went on about our business. I'm looking forward to reading it.

If you'd like to hear an interview with Ms. Priest, Matt and Shannon at Seattle Geekly spoke with her a few months ago. As for Ms. Priest, I don't doubt she could have kicked our asses all over town if we had actually been lurking thugs or something. She looked fast and capable of great feats.

11:01 am - Another good one!

From Forge --- with mention of Tom Doherty in the acknowledgement. The book is cast as a murder mystery set in San Francisco: "The Hummingbird Wizard", a first novel by Meredith Blevins. It's no hard-boiled trifle, 200 pp of tough-guy banter, chases, and fisticuffs. This is 397 pp about a clan of modern Gypsies tackling the killing of a man who married into the family and and became their lawyer. In addition to a large cast of unusual characters, there's the bonus of a glimpse into a "mysterious" world with a glamor all its own.

The heroine/narrator is sharp and funny, with a lyrical vein that adds the sense of an interior life but never clogs things up for the sake of a pretty turn of phrase. Her reluctant rapprochement with her high-powered Gypsy mother-in-law-and-family is unpredictable and entertaining. It's not every day that I encounter characters who slip under, over, and around the law when they need to (which is often) with such practiced nonchalance that this reader, at least, really believed that they could live that way and get away with it -- yet also retain the concommitant naivete of cultural edge-walkers.

There are a few rough spots and miss-steps, but for a first book, this is a bold and exuberant piece of story-telling; I'm hoping for a sequel.
